Morocco’s traditional handicrafts are gaining global appeal having had around five million mentions worldwide on the Internet and 159,500 mentions nationally in 2023, according to “La Maison de l’Artisan’s” (House of Crafts) first annual report on the E-reputation of Moroccan crafts.
Minister of Tourism and Crafts Fatim-Zahra Ammor launched this research project surveying 4,400 customers who purchased Moroccan handicrafts in 2023.
Pottery is the most cited product, according to the report, accounting for 16% of “Handmade” mentions globally, with the United States leading the way with 14% of global mentions, according to a press release from the ministry.
The total satisfaction percentage was 91%, with good evaluations for product design (20.6%), shipping (13.7%), and product quality (13.6%), with carpets, traditional apparel, and copperware being the most popular items offered online.
Moroccan handicrafts are becoming increasingly popular across the world, especially in France (24% of mentions) and the United States (14.5%).
The most popular goods in 2023 were carpets (17.6% of mentions), jewelry (10.9% of mentions), and zellige (10.7%). Instagram is the most popular medium for communicating about these items, accounting for 27% of the total amount of mentions.
These figures illustrate the rising worldwide recognition and appreciation for the excellence of Moroccan handicrafts, as well as the sector’s relevance to the Moroccan economy and culture.
