Morocco and Spain expect to see vehicle traffic increase by over 6% from the previous year, to nearly 820,000 vehicles, and passenger numbers to rise by 4%, totaling 3.3 million, during the 2024 “Strait Crossing Operation”, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
The operation, which runs until September 15, is intended to manage the large influx of Moroccan citizens returning to their home country via Spain during the months of July and August.
Last year, 3,219,618 passengers and 775,410 vehicles used the ferry route across the Strait of Gibraltar.
Officials anticipate that the upward trend will persist, reflecting the ongoing rise in summer travel.
This operation involves a number of Spanish government entities, including port authorities, the Directorate General of Spain’s Merchant Navy, and the Directorate General of Public Health. A special fleet plan and provincial coordination plans are in place to ensure smooth traffic flow and passenger safety.
The dates identified for the operation are June 14-16, August 1-5 and August 30-September 1. During these periods, special measures, such as ticket interchangeability, will be implemented to expedite boarding.
Civil Protection is urging travelers to plan their trips carefully and arrive at the port with confirmed tickets to facilitate the services provided by the shipping companies.
