Christian Cambon, President of the France-Morocco Friendship Group and Senator for Val-de-Marne, revealed in an interview on the show “Extra Local” with the host Marie Brette on Friday that France intends to reconsider its stance towards Morocco, particularly in light of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for the Sahara.
Senator Cambon addressed a question about French Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Séjourner’s intentions to strengthen relations regarding the topic of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, stating that the Minister’s recent statements indicated France’s determination to reconsider its approach in the direction of Morocco.
He stated unequivocally, “I think France intends to get things moving and modify its policy in favor of Morocco, especially with regard to the question of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for the Sahara.”
Providing insight into the necessity of this shift, Cambon pointed to European countries that have supported the Moroccan plan, considering it a “serious, credible, and realistic resolution.”
He emphasized the need for France to evolve its stance, a sentiment echoed by the Friendship Group in its advocacy for a change in approach.
In discussing the significance of Morocco as an ally, the friendship group head expressed a particular affection for the country, noting its geopolitical position “at the crossroads, at the meeting point of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean.”
He praised Franco-Moroccan relations, highlighting Morocco’s substantial support during operations in Mali against terrorism.
Emphasizing the importance of assisting Morocco, he pointed out the significant presence of dozens of French-inspired educational institutions across the country. He also acknowledged Morocco’s early emphasis on “tolerance among religions and civilizations.”
