“Mauritania’s assumption of the African Union (AU) presidency is well-deserved due to its stabilizing role in the region,” said Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita on Saturday.
Speaking to Sahara Media during the African summit held in Addis Ababa, Bourita emphasized Mauritania’s paramount importance in maintaining stability, and President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani’s positive influence on various African issues.
He went on to say that Morocco was among the supporters of this nomination based on the Morocco-Mauritania strong bilateral ties and good neighborliness.
“Mauritanian president can count on Morocco’s backing, instructed by King Mohammed VI, to hold a successful presidency,” the minister noted.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania officially took over the AU presidency on Saturday.
On January 22, 2024, Bourita held discussions with his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk, reaffirming the robust and distinctive relationship between the two countries, rooted in historical, geographical, and ancestral bonds.
