Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighted “the important role of young people in improving road safety and mobility,” on Saturday in Marrakech, Morocco, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
In a statement delivered by UN Special Envoy for Road Safety, Etienne Krug at the opening session of the 3rd Global Youth Assembly for Road Safety, Ghebreyesus called for greater youth involvement in addressing road safety challenges.
He noted that road accidents remain the leading cause of death among young people worldwide.
“The roads belong to all of us,” he said, urging young participants to speak up and take an active role in shaping safer mobility policies.
Ghebreyesus also pointed out that many countries have made significant progress in road safety over the past decade by improving public transportation and expanding urban infrastructure to better accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.
