Afghanistan returned 17 nationals imprisoned in Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, and Mauritania on Saturday, according to the Pajhwok News Agency.
The Afghan embassy in Cairo coordinated with authorities in each country to secure their release.
“Over the past three months, 17 Afghans imprisoned for various reasons in Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Sudan and Mauritania have been freed and returned to Afghanistan thanks to the efforts of the Afghan embassy in Cairo,” the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The ministry added that the embassy will continue efforts to protect Afghan nationals and defend their rights.
Officials did not provide details on the reasons for their detention or the circumstances surrounding their release.
