Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf was elected chair of the African Union on Saturday during the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa.
Youssouf won 33 out of 49 eligible votes, surpassing the required two-thirds majority.
He defeated Madagascar’s candidate in the first round and Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the following round.
After multiple rounds of voting, Youssouf succeeded Moussa Faki Mahamat as head of the AU Commission.
