Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, Ahmed El Bouari, said on Thursday that the supply of agricultural products in national markets remains stable despite low levels of rainfall and Morocco’s ongoing drought conditions.
Speaking at a press briefing following the Government Council meeting, El Bouari noted that for the third consecutive year, water reserves in major irrigated areas have significantly declined.
Despite these conditions, he said, farmers are striving to ensure the availability of agricultural produce to Morocco’s domestic market.
El Bouari pointed out that the ministry has introduced several measures to support and assist farmers during this agricultural season, including providing and subsidizing selected seeds for autumn cereals (around 1.3 million quintals) and supplying nitrogen fertilizers (nearly 200,000 tons).
The Minister noted that poultry and egg production have increased over last year, and as the ministry takes action to boost production, it is also striving to maintain affordable prices for citizens in the coming months.
El Bouari also noted an initiative to ensure an accessible supply of fish at reasonable prices during Ramadan.
