The US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico on Monday to the Gulf of America for US-based users of Google Maps, CNN reported.
The name changes of the oceanic basin come after US President Donald Trump issued an executive order renaming the area, staying true to his word from his inauguration speech. The Gulf is shared between the US, Mexico, and Cuba.
However, people using Google Maps in Mexico will still see the Gulf of Mexico, while the rest of the world will see both names.
Shortly after taking Office, Trump signed an executive order renaming other geographical locations to “honor American greatness.”
The order also criticized former President Barack Obama’s decision to rename Mount McKinley to Denali in 2015, which he implemented in recognition of the region’s native population.
The order said that renaming McKinley was “an affront to President McKinley’s life, his achievements, and his sacrifice.” It also drew a comparison between the 25th US President, William McKinley and Trump, adding that the late president “championed tariffs” and was assassinated “in an attack on our nation’s values and our success.”
