Apple replaced “Gulf of Mexico” with “Gulf of America” on its map services on Tuesday, following on the heels of Google Maps which had already made the change.
The moves come after US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Sunday as he was flying over the Gulf aboard Airforce One on his way to the Super Bowl, declaring February 9 “Gulf of America Day.”
He had previously signed an executive order upon taking office to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the “Gulf of America,” along with name changes for certain geographical locations in the US.
Google stated that US-based users will now see “Gulf of America,” while users in Mexico will see “Gulf of Mexico.” For the rest of the world, however, both names will appear.
The US Geographic Names Information System formally changed the name late Sunday. Microsoft also updated Bing Maps to reflect the new designation.
