São Paulo faces severe weather as heavy rain continues to flood several areas and knocks out power to thousands of homes. The São Paulo state Civil Defense issued an emergency alert on Monday afternoon, warning residents in the northern, central, and eastern zones about the risk of heavy rainfall and flooding.
Authorities sent the warning through the new cell broadcast emergency alert system, according to Brazil’s news agency.
Within hours, floodwaters overwhelmed multiple locations, including Osasco, a city in the São Paulo province, where hail also pounded the region.
Civil Defense on Monday had already placed several areas of the city on high alert. The storm knocked out electricity to 65,000 properties across the state, according to power provider Enel. Crews are working to restore service as quickly as possible.
