Israel Bachar, Israel’s Consul General to the Pacific Southwest, tweeted on Friday, “My remarks in regard to Morocco were not accurate,” addressing rumors about a potential plan to relocate Gaza residents to Morocco.
The rumors began after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested displacing Palestinians from Gaza during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, earlier this week.
Initial reports from Israeli media outlets stated Morocco as a potential destination for Gaza residents. However, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant never referenced Morocco in connection with the plan.
Bachar’s statement aimed to clarify the misinformation, reaffirming that the kingdom is not involved in any relocation scheme.
Trump’s proposal, which included transforming Gaza into a “Middle Eastern Riviera,” faced widespread international backlash.
The United Nations, the European Union, and countries such as Germany, France, and Spain, along with Middle Eastern nations including Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, rejected the plan due to concerns about regional stability and human rights.
Palestinian officials warned that the proposal undermines their right to self-determination and could destabilize the region for decades. Critics questioned the feasibility of relocating Gaza’s population, pointing out the logistical challenges and unpreparedness of potential host regions.
