A 47-year-old man was arrested after burning a copy of the Quran at the Glade of Light memorial in Manchester city center, in England, on Saturday.
Police detained the man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense.
The incident, which occurred near the memorial honoring the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, was captured on a livestream showing the burning of the holy book.
The man was taken into custody at around 2:45 p.m. (local time) and remains under questioning.
Assistant Chief Constable Stephanie Parker addressed the concerns raised by the incident, saying, “We understand the deep concern this will cause within some of our diverse communities and are aware of a live video circulating.”
“We acted swiftly to make an arrest and respect people’s right to freedom of expression. However, when actions cross into intimidation or cause harm and distress, we will always take appropriate action when reported,” she added.
