The United Nations appointed Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Omar Hilale Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission on Thursday, representing the continent of Africa. This is the first time a Moroccan official has held the position, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
Commission members also re-elected Hilale by acclamation as Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission’s Central African Republic (CAR) configuration.
The UN Peacebuilding Commission is comprised of 31 member states and key stakeholders to mobilize resources and develop integrated strategies to promote post-conflict recovery and ensure lasting peace. The commission provides recommendations to enhance coordination among UN entities, with a focus on Security Council members to secure the necessary resources for reconstruction efforts after conflicts.
Morocco’s election as Vice-Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission is poised to strengthen its bilateral and multilateral relations and establish it as a major player in disaster relief efforts and post-conflict reconstruction. It will also promote dialogue and diplomacy and strengthen institutions to advance socio-economic development, according to MAP.
Similarly, Morocco’s re-election as Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission’s CAR configuration underscores the strong bilateral ties between Morocco and the Central African Republic. King Mohammed VI has personally worked to deepen and expand these relations to support CAR’s resilience, facilitate successful local elections, and contribute to lasting peace and sustainable development.
