Morocco’s National Commission for the Control of Personal Data Protection (CNDP) held a forum on Wednesday in Rabat discussing the protection of the personal medical data of patients in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat, local media reported.
Under the theme “Protecting Privacy in the Digital Age,” the forum is part of the “Personal Data Protection and Privacy Week,” an initiative by the CNDP running from January 27 to 31 across Morocco.
A panel of experts, institutional representatives, and civil society actors gathered to discuss the challenges of medical data security and privacy. Participants emphasized the need to strengthen transparency and build patient trust in the face of digital transformation.
Speaking at the event, Omar Seghrouchni, CNDP’s President, said there is no conflict between professional secrecy and personal data protection.
“Our role is to oversee the processing of data, not to access individuals’ private information,” he told reporters, adding that the commission does not access personal data. He reaffirmed that the CNDP’s primary mission is to uphold fundamental rights and freedoms in personal data processing.
Seghrouchni also highlighted the ethical obligations of the medical profession, noting that healthcare professionals, bound by the Hippocratic Oath, are required to respect both human dignity and data privacy.
Personal Data Protection and Privacy Week features a series of activities and conferences across Morocco, to raise public awareness about the significance of personal data protection in daily life and financial management.
