Salwan Momika, 38, the man who burned a copy of the Quran outside Stockholm Central Mosque in 2023, is reported to have been killed in an apartment in Södertälje, Stockholm, on Wednesday evening, The BBC reported.
Momika is an Iraqi anti-Islam activist living in Sweden and was charged in August with “agitation against an ethnic group” in four incidents in the summer of 2023.
The Swedish government had granted Momika permission to burn the holy book in an apparent act of protest, which sparked violent protests nationwide.
The verdict against Momika and another unnamed individual was due to be delivered on Thursday and was postponed after it was “confirmed that one of the defendants had died,” Stockholm District Court said.
Stockholm police said in a statement that five people had been arrested on suspicion of killing Momika.
