A sudden and intense thunderstorm inundated Tangier at 9:00 PM on Wednesday. In just fifteen minutes, several neighborhoods were flooded, leaving residents struggling to navigate rising waters.
Torrential rain poured down on the city, quickly turning streets into rivers. In the neighborhoods of Mesnana, Beni Makada, Al Aouama, Souani, and Tanja Balia, drainage systems failed to handle the sudden inundation, causing water levels to rise rapidly. Cars stalled in the streets, and pedestrians sought shelter as floodwaters carried debris through the city.
Stormwater channels, including Oued Souani and Oued Mghogha, overflowed due to the heavy rainfall. The flooding disrupted traffic, forcing many drivers to abandon their vehicles. Emergency services responded to multiple distress calls, though no casualties have been reported so far.
Earlier in the day, the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) had issued an orange-level weather alert, warning of heavy thunderstorms with rainfall between 20 and 35 mm.
The advisory covered Tangier, Tétouan, Fahs-Anjra, M’Diq-Fnideq, Larache, and Chefchaouen, forecasting intense rain from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.
In September 2024, Morocco experienced heavy floods in Central Morocco that claimed dozens of lives in Tata city in the southeast of Morocco and transformed Merzouga’s desert into a big, lake-filled oasis.
