King Mohammed VI of Morocco has donated EUR 1 million to the construction of the Grand Mosque in the French city of Metz, a project aimed at supporting local Muslim worshippers and fostering interreligious dialogue, according to François Grosdidier, mayor of Metz.
The mosque, costing EUR 15.7 million, reflects a commitment to structuring the Muslim faith in France, with contributions from the city of Metz, Morocco, and other international donors.
The mosque, located along the Boulevard de la Défense near the technopôle, will provide a dignified space for worshippers in the region. It is also seen as a significant step in enhancing relations between different religious communities.
The contribution from King Mohammed VI, made in 2023, came after a municipal grant of nearly EUR 500,000 was awarded to the project in July 2024.
He also underlined the importance of the partnership between France and Morocco in combating terrorism, extremism, and fanaticism.
The mayor noted that the King’s donation is part of a broader effort to contribute positively to the religious and social fabric of the city. “The King of Morocco is an ally of France in the fight against terrorism, extremism, and fanaticism. He has supported the building of the Grand Mosque in Metz, just as he supported the restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris,” Grosdidier said.
The mosque is expected to accommodate several thousand worshippers when completed, with its inauguration scheduled for the coming months.
