Moroccan nationals accounted for 8.5 million overnight stays in hotels in 2024, representing 30% of total overnight stays, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said in the Lower House on Monday.
Moroccan tourists outpaced all foreign nationalities in hotel stays, Akhannouch explained. He credited a revamped tourism roadmap for offering a unique and enhanced travel experience tailored to Moroccans. The roadmap focused on developing coastal and nature-based destinations and innovative tourism products.
Akhannouch outlined efforts to expand the country’s infrastructure, including a modern transport network, which aligns with the 2030 vision for Morocco.
The government is accelerating several key road projects, such as the Tiznit–Dakhla expressway, the Berrechid–Tit Mellil highway, and the expansion of the Casablanca–Berrechid highway.
Planned developments include a continental highway linking Rabat and Casablanca, the Guercif–Nador highway, and a new highway connecting Agadir to Tiznit.
In rail transport, Akhannouch pointed out plans to extend the high-speed rail line from Kenitra to Marrakech, covering 430 kilometers.
Regarding air travel, the government plans to expand passenger capacity from 38 million to 80 million by 2035. Major projects include expanding Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca to accommodate 23 million passengers by 2030, with a third runway, and increasing capacity at Marrakech Airport to accommodate 14 million passengers by 2030.
Renovations are also underway at Agadir Airport to handle 6.3 million passengers by 2030, in addition to upgrading airports in Rabat-Salé, Tetouan, Al Hoceima, Fes, Tangier, Marrakech, Beni Mellal, Zagora, and Nador.
The government’s tourism strategy prioritizes sustainability, innovation, and connectivity, he maintained. By improving infrastructure and tailoring products for domestic travelers, Morocco hopes to strengthen its tourism sector and meet the goals of its 2030 vision.
These efforts, Akhannouch stated, will enhance the travel experience and position Morocco as a premier global destination.
