The Deputy of the French National Assembly, a representative of Nord’s nineteenth constituency since 2017, Sébastien Chenu is expected to chair the France-Morocco Friendship Group in France’s Lower House of Parliament, Africa Intelligence reported on Tuesday.
Chenu’s far-right party, the French National Rally (RN), highlighted Morocco’s importance to it, describing it as a “major country” in the areas of diplomacy and economic development and a “key player in the fight against immigration,” which enjoys a “strong diaspora.”
Chenu’s position in favor of strengthening dialogue with Morocco appears to align with the RN‘s broader strategy of targeted openness. However, his political positions on controversial issues have not been without criticism.
In June, Chenu found himself at the center of a heated debate after advocating for the removal of people of “non-European dual nationality.” Facing significant backlash, he eventually walked back his comments, illustrating the delicate balancing act required within the evolving political landscape of the RN.
Observers are closely watching how Chenu’s leadership in this role might influence French-Moroccan relations, especially at a time when diplomacy and international cooperation remain key priorities for both nations.
