APM Terminals MedPort Tangier has successfully completed its three-year expansion project, it announced, having increased the terminal’s annual capacity to 5.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The project was delivered on schedule, with the final phase coming into operation this month, according to the company.
APM added an additional 1 million TEUs to the terminal’s capacity and extended the quay length to two kilometers, significantly enhancing its operational capabilities.
“Nearly a year ago, we commissioned the second phase of our expansion,” said Keld Pedersen, Managing Director of APM Terminals WestMed. “This month, we added another 1 million TEUs to our capacity in Tangier, which means we are fully prepared to meet the needs of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd when their new network is launched in February 2025.”
The two terminals operated by APM Terminals in Morocco serve as key hubs for the Gemini partnership—an operational collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd on East-West trade routes.
The expansion has also had a significant socio-economic impact, creating 500 jobs in 2023 and 2024 and strengthening the terminal’s diverse and skilled workforce. “Our employees, among the best in the industry, work tirelessly to provide optimal service to our customers,” Pedersen asserted.
MedPort Tangier is one of the most technologically advanced terminals globally, featuring automated berthing systems, digital quay planning, and a simulation tool specifically designed for the Gemini collaboration. These innovations have helped Tangier achieve fourth place in the World Bank and S&P Global’s ranking for the most efficient container terminals worldwide.
“Our expansion is not just about increasing capacity; it’s also about integrating technologies that reduce port stay times, enhance crane productivity, and lower vessel emissions through shore power,” Pedersen explained.
This milestone reinforces APM Terminals MedPort Tangier’s role as a vital gateway for global trade, ensuring efficiency and sustainability while supporting Morocco’s position as a leading logistics hub in the region.
