A recent report published by the African Studies Center at Nanyang Technological University on January 20, , titled: “Morocco Emerges as a Force for Regenerative Agriculture in Africa,” underscores the importance of regenerative agriculture as a modern and sustainable approach to boosting agricultural production.
The report, written by Professor Michael Tanchum, explains how the approach enhances water efficiency, increases crop yields, and boosts soil carbon storage through techniques such as reviving soil microbiomes and rebuilding organic matter.
Morocco stands out as a leading adopter of regenerative agriculture in Africa, particularly in the face of the continent’s harsh climate conditions. The report highlights the growing challenges Africa faces, including desertification and land degradation, which threaten the livelihoods of its 350 million smallholder farmers.
Against this backdrop, Morocco has played a pivotal role in providing regenerative agricultural solutions that focus on reducing carbon emissions, monetizing carbon credits, and promoting sustainable farming practices.
Morocco’s competitive advantage in regenerative agriculture stems from its state-owned OCP Group, the world’s largest phosphate producer and a leader in fertilizer production. Through OCP’s investments in innovation and sustainability, Morocco has emerged as a global player in advancing agricultural development, particularly in regenerative agriculture.
The report also highlights the incentives the Kingdom provides to local farmers to implement regenerative farming practices.
“While engaging these farmers is a formidable task, Morocco has established regenerative agriculture solutions businesses on the basis of carbon reduction and the monetization of carbon credits that are especially attuned to the needs of African agriculture,” the report reads.
The country extends its efforts beyond national borders, supporting Sub-Saharan African nations through programs and initiatives that engage small-scale farmers. These efforts place Morocco at the forefront of global efforts to tackle environmental and agricultural challenges, ensuring sustainable and inclusive food security.
