InfoMigrants, an international magazine focusing on migration issues, has commended Morocco’s proactive strategies in managing irregular migration and combating terrorism. The magazine described Morocco as a “reference point for the EU” due to its effective policies and robust collaboration with European partners.
Morocco’s strategic position as a major transit hub for migrants heading to Europe has placed it at the forefront of regional and global efforts to address irregular migration.
In December, Morocco signed a landmark agreement with the European Union to boost economic support for border control and migrant assistance programs. The deal, part of the broader Rabat Process, integrates migration management with development initiatives in origin and transit countries.
The agreement also focuses on strengthening cooperation in monitoring Mediterranean migration routes and training Moroccan security forces, in collaboration with European experts. However, despite these efforts, Morocco continues to face challenges posed by criminal human smuggling networks.
In recent months, Moroccan authorities, working closely with European partners, have dismantled several criminal organizations. For instance, in November, a coordinated operation led to the rescue of over 300 migrants in the Mediterranean and the arrest of more than 50 human smugglers involved in high-risk sea crossings. The operation underscored the importance of resource-sharing, intelligence exchange, and coordinated strategies between Morocco and the EU.
On the security front, Morocco has solidified its reputation as a pivotal ally in combating terrorism across North Africa and the Sahel.
Moroccan intelligence services recently collaborated with international partners to foil a terrorist plan targeting critical European infrastructure, further showcasing Morocco’s role as a cornerstone of global counter-terrorism efforts.
To enhance its security framework, Morocco has also adopted advanced surveillance technologies and reinforced its counterterrorism measures. This approach complements its migration policies, addressing interconnected challenges that require multilateral cooperation.
InfoMigrants concluded that Morocco’s dual role as both a transit country and a security partner highlights the need for integrated strategies.
These strategies must address the root causes of migration, ensure stability, and foster development on both shores of the Mediterranean.
The magazine praised Morocco for exemplifying how strategic partnerships and innovative policies can make a significant impact in addressing migration and security challenges.
