American commentator Candace Owens has reignited a conspiracy theory claiming that France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron, was born male, and has promised to publish alleged evidence supporting this claim on January 30.
Owens has targeted Brigitte Macron by resurfacing this baseless rumor, initially propagated in December 2021, about her supposed transgender identity.
In response to the allegations, lawyers representing Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron sent Owens a formal letter condemning her statements. Instead of retracting her claims, Owens doubled down, sharing on her X (formerly Twitter) account on January 17 that she had responded to the Macrons.
Maybe 21 questions was too much.
If you could just answer numbers 2-7 we’d greatly appreciate it. They require simple ‘yes or no’ responses.Seems a lot easier and less costly than sending a 100-page strongly worded letter overseas, @EmmanuelMacron. https://t.co/NjAmPowgY4

“We sent our response yesterday to Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron,” Owens wrote. “We included specific questions they need to answer before we publish our full investigation into Brigitte. These are fairly simple questions, and I look forward to receiving simple answers.”
She added sarcastically: “Perhaps 21 questions were too many. If you could just answer numbers 2 through 7, we would greatly appreciate it. They require simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers. That seems much easier and less expensive than sending a strongly worded 100-page legal letter overseas.”
Among the questions Owens has posed to the couple are:
- “Was Brigitte Macron biologically born male or did she live as such at any point in her life?”
- “Has Brigitte Macron ever used the name ‘Véronique’?”
- “Has Brigitte Macron physically given birth to three children?”
Owens also claimed on January 10 to have received additional information from a French journalist, whose identity she has not disclosed. She continues to use this supposed evidence to justify her accusations, despite widespread criticism and the lack of any credible support for these claims.
The US commentator originally amplified the rumor in March 2024, stating: “This is neither a joke nor an exaggeration. Apart from political assassinations, this is arguably the greatest political scandal in the history of humanity.”
The conspiracy theory traces back to December 2021, when Brigitte Macron was falsely accused of being a transgender woman born as “Jean-Michel Trogneux.” This baseless claim was widely debunked at the time but has resurfaced due to Owens’ persistence.
The Macrons have remained silent on the matter, refusing to dignify the accusations with a response, while Owens has promised to release what she describes as “damning evidence” by the end of January. The episode underscores the role of misinformation and personal attacks in today’s digital media landscape.
