Tanger Med Port in Morocco retained its status as the Mediterranean’s largest port, handling a record-breaking 10.24 million containers in 2024, marking an 18.8% increase from the previous year, according to a statement reported by the country’s Press Agency (MAP).
The port authority said that the port surpassed its 2024 goal of nine million containers. In addition, the port handled 142 million tons of cargo last year, a 16.2% rise compared to 2023.
The port authority credited reduced waiting times and improvements in operations for the milestone. Upgraded facilities, new equipment, and enhanced docking processes played a significant role in boosting efficiency.
The port’s automotive terminals processed 600,872 vehicles in 2024, a 4% increase from 2023. The figure includes vehicles manufactured in Morocco for export, which are a key part of the country’s industrial output.
Tanger Med Port also reported growth in international trucking, handling 516,842 trucks in 2024, an 8.1% increase from 2023. Industrial goods shipments grew by 6.8%, while food product movements rose by 7.2%.
On the passenger side, the port welcomed 3.047 million travelers last year, a 13% surge from 2023.
Tanger Med Port, located on the Strait of Gibraltar east of Tangier, serves as a critical gateway for global trade and remains a cornerstone of Morocco’s economic development.
