Morocco is doubling down on its efforts to boost Chinese tourism through a renewed partnership with Ctrip, a Chinese travel platform, according to a statement from the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT).
The agreement focuses on a multi-faceted strategy combining digital content, visitor flows, and tailored travel packages. Morocco’s official tourism platform, “Planete,” will serve as the hub for campaigns, promotions, social media activities, and live events, all designed to enhance the country’s appeal to Chinese tourists seeking fresh destinations.
Tourism data reflects a strong recovery in global travel. According to the World Tourism Organization, Africa welcomed 66.4 million international visitors in 2023, recovering 96% of pre-pandemic levels.
Morocco is currently a regional leader, attracting 14.5 million visitors in 2023, a 34% increase from 2022 and a 12% rise compared to 2019, according to the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism.
Ctrip reported significant progress in Chinese tourism to Morocco. By mid-2024, Chinese arrivals had reached 70% of their 2019 levels, with group travel recovering even faster at 80%. Tourism revenue also rebounded to nearly match pre-pandemic figures.
To capitalize on this momentum, Ctrip plans to roll out customized services for Chinese travelers. These include flights, hotel bookings, personalized tours, and limited subsidies.
