Algerian authorities released a new group of Moroccan detainees on Wednesday, including 34 young men, through the border crossing separating Maghnia and Oujda, known as “Zouj Beghal,” local media reported.
The Moroccan Association for Assisting Migrants in Vulnerable Situations issued a statement confirming the release, noting that the individuals had completed their sentences prior to their release.
The association, which handles cases involving migrants in distress, revealed that it is currently managing over 450 files related to missing persons, detainees, and migrants held while attempting to cross various routes, including those through Tunisia, Libya, and Algeria.
Despite this positive step, the association highlighted that many Moroccans detained by Algeria remain in administrative incarceration, awaiting deportation.
It also pointed to ongoing technical and procedural challenges, which it seeks to address through international forums such as the International Conference on Missing Persons and Enforced Disappearances held in Geneva.
The association is working to facilitate the repatriation of the remaining detainees and uncover the fate of missing individuals, including the human remains of six migrants—two of whom are young women from Morocco’s eastern region.
