Moroccan authorities intercepted an international drug trafficking attempt on Wednesday afternoon at the El Guerguerat border crossing in a joint operation with National Security and Customs operatives, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
Authorities seized 37 kilograms and 683 grams of cocaine after sniffer dogs uncovered the drugs, hidden inside the engines of two international freight trucks bearing Moroccan license plates, according to security sources cited by MAP.
The vehicles departed from a sub-Saharan African country; security sources did not specify which country. Both drivers, aged 24 and 47, were detained at the scene following the discovery of the narcotics.
A preliminary investigation has been launched under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to uncover the full details of the operation, identify all those involved, and track the criminal network’s regional and international connections.
The joint operation is part of ongoing, intensified efforts by security services at the El Guerguerat border crossing to combat international drug trafficking and transnational crime.
