The President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, announced Europe’s first zero-emission green corridor during the opening of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR 2025) in Madrid.
The maritime project will connect Tarifa, in Spain’s southern Cádiz province, with Tangier, Morocco, via an eco-friendly ferry route across the Strait of Gibraltar, the launch date remains unknown.
The network will feature two electric-powered fast ferries, which will drastically reduce the carbon emissions that are produced by traditional ships through this route connecting Europe to Africa.
Currently transporting 1.6 million passengers annually, the route is projected to reach up to four million travelers in the coming years.
President Moreno commended the technological and financial commitment of the Port of Tarifa and maritime company “Balearia,” key partners in this transformative project. The two ships will bear the symbolic names “Spain 2030” and “Morocco 2030,” nodding to the shared 2030 Agenda and the FIFA World Cup which the two countries will co-host in five years.
