German automotive wiring systems company Leoni opened a massive new factory in Agadir on Monday, investing USD 23 million to build a facility for the production of wiring and cable systems for vehicles built in Morocco and elsewhere.
Located in the Souss-Massa industrial acceleration zone of the city, the Leoni Morocco factory site spans 7.6 hectares with 19,000 square meters dedicated to production. The venture is expected to create over 3,000 direct jobs by 2027, growing the size of Leoni Morocco’s workforce to 19,000.
During the opening ceremony, company representatives said: “This project strengthens Agadir’s position as a key industrial hub, leveraging its modern infrastructure, logistics, and a workforce trained to meet industry demands.”
Leoni’s COO and Executive Board member, Ingo Spengler, highlighted the strategic importance of the new factory. “Our expansion in Agadir reflects a long-term commitment to Morocco and its growing economy,” he said, and “reinforces our confidence in the potential of the African continent.” He said the project will enhance Leoni’s global competitiveness in commercial vehicles while “integrating intelligent production processes across its network.”
Leoni Morocco’s General Manager, Fakhri Bouguerra, said the new facility is a pivotal step in the company’s development strategy. “By choosing this region, we actively contribute to the local economy while advancing innovation and excellence in automotive technologies,” he said.
Bouguerra highlighted the factory’s role in generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs and supporting the region’s industrial growth.
The project is part of a broader agreement between Leoni and the Moroccan government, involving six key investments in the automotive sector totaling over MAD 932 million (USD 91 million). Together, the ventures are expected to create 7,100 direct jobs by 2027.
Morocco’s wiring and cabling industry has been rapidly growing, with exports totalling USD 300 million in the first 11 months of 2024.
