Private Moroccan healthcare company Oncorad Group announced a MAD 3.5 billion investment to build 30 new hospitals by 2028, the company’s CEO Redouane Semlali told Asharq.
Founded in 2000, Oncorad initially specialized in cancer treatments and eventually expanded its operations to various medical specialties. It now operates seven hospitals across Morocco’s major metropolitan centers.
Oncorad Group’s investment highlights the growing role of private hospitals in Morocco, which some experts believe may cause the quality of Morocco’s public healthcare to plummet.
Some studies suggest that while private healthcare operators may enhance the revenue from each patient, low-income patients will also suffer from a decrease in access to care.
The Kingdom’s healthcare sector already faces significant challenges, including shortages of hospital beds, doctors, and nurses. In 2021, the country launched a program to provide universal health coverage for all citizens.
This initiative has spurred a surge in private investments in the sector, with rising demand for medical services projected in the coming years.
