The authorities in the Republic of Korea have placed impeached former president Yoon Suk Yeol in solitary confinement following his arrest last week on insurrection charges over his short-lived declaration of martial law, Reuters reported.
Yeol is now in a 12-square-meter cell at the detention facility in Euiwang, South of Seoul, to which he was moved on Sunday evening.
According to an official at the facility, he has passed “thorough physical inspection” and had his identifying photos taken after being placed under pretrial custody.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous as he lacks authority to address the media, told Reuters, “Everyone gets a picture taken 100% of the time when you’re entering the facility, regardless of whether you’re the president.”
The physical examination is intended to determine “whether you’re hiding something,” in addition to assessing health, the source stated.
Head of the Korea Correctional Service Shin Yong-hae, told a parliamentary justice committee on Monday that Yeol had “cooperated” and that everything proceeded smoothly.
