Four Moroccan truck drivers went missing Saturday morning while traveling on the road between Dori in northeastern Burkina Faso and Téra in western Niger, according to reliable sources.
The drivers were transporting goods in three trucks through a region known for terrorist and armed group activity, where transport vehicles are often looted.
Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its embassies in Burkina Faso and Niger have activated a crisis cell and are coordinating with local authorities to locate the missing drivers.
On Jan. 11, an armed ambush in the area killed 18 soldiers and several civilians. Drivers using the Dori-Téra route are advised to take precautions due to frequent security threats, the source said.
Despite the risks, the Moroccan drivers reportedly traveled without an escort and appeared unaware of the dangers in the area.
Authorities warned that traveling in high-risk zones without adequate security measures is extremely dangerous.
Unauthorized travel in sensitive areas increases the risk of ambushes, kidnappings, and attacks.
Investigations are ongoing as Moroccan and local authorities work to locate the drivers in a challenging security environment.
