The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) updated Morocco’s map on its website to reflect the country’s full territorial extent just one day before President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The updated map includes a description that reads: “Map of Morocco showing major population centers as well as parts of neighboring countries and the North Atlantic Ocean.” It adds, “Note that in 2020, the U.S. recognized Western Sahara as part of Morocco.”
The update aligns with the decision made during Trump’s first term when the U.S. officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region. Diplomatic ties between Morocco and the U.S. have continued to strengthen, maintaining positive momentum into 2024.
In a significant development, France followed suit in July 2024. France’s President Emmanuel Macron sent a letter to King Mohammed VI, formally endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as “the only credible foundation for a political solution to the territorial dispute.”
