Sheikh Taib Khal Laayoune, a Quranic scholar and reciter, died on Saturday at the age of 94.
Khal Laayoune gained prominence as one of the first Moroccan Quranic reciters to captivate audiences with his traditional Moroccan style of Quranic recitation, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
The funeral took place at his place of residence in the Ibn Sina neighborhood of Rabat. The Janazah prayer (funeral prayer in Islam) was held at the Chouhada mosque in Rabat after the Asr prayer.
Born in Marrakesh in 1931, Khal Laayoune rose to prominence with his melodious voice on Radio Dar Si Said in Marrakesh, where his Quranic recitations were widely cherished.
The late King Hassan II appointed Khal Laayoune to oversee Quranic memorization and Islamic studies for members of the royal family, including Prince Moulay Rachid and other princesses.
