Israel’s cabinet approved the ceasefire-hostage deal with Hamas on Saturday, a day before the agreement is scheduled to start, Reuters reported.
Israel’s President Benjamin Netanyahu’s office ratified the agreement following a six-hour meeting, which could pave the way for an end to the deadly war in Gaza, which lasted 15 months and killed over 46,000 Palestinians.
“The government has approved the framework for the return of the hostages. The framework for the hostages’ release will come into effect on Sunday,” Netanyahu’s office said in a brief statement.
Qatar, Egypt, and the United States mediated the ceasefire deal, which outlines a six-week initial ceasefire with the gradual withdrawal of Israel’s forces from the Gaza Strip.
