The Moroccan government announced on Thursday that a drafting committee would be formed to revise the Family Code (Moudawena), according to Government Spokesperson Mustapha Baitas.
Speaking during a press briefing, Baitas explained that the committee will consist of representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family, as well as the General Secretariat of the Government.
Baitas said that the secretariat’s expertise will play a key role, given the intersections between the Family Code revisions and other active laws, as well as pending legislative proposals.
Legal and religious experts will make up the core of the committee. Baitas noted that the group might seek additional expertise from other fields if necessary.
The government has been closely monitoring the discussions surrounding the Family Code revisions. Baitas pointed to the December 26 Cabinet meeting as a key milestone, where the Minister of Justice presented a summary of the proposed changes.
The proposals had been previously shared with the public during a communication session.
The proposed changes focus on updating the Family Code in line with modern societal and legal realities while respecting the country’s religious and cultural principles.
However, Baitas pointed out that these proposals are still in the legal drafting stage, and further discussions will refine their application and implementation. He urged patience, noting that many of the concerns raised are premature until a detailed legal framework is finalized.
