The Moroccan Federation of Newspaper Publishers (FMEJ), the Moroccan Federation of Media (FMM), and the National Union of Press, Media, and Communication, affiliated with the Moroccan Labor Union (CMT), have strongly condemned the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Communication for its lack of serious consultation and communication with stakeholders in addressing reform of the journalism industry.
In a joint statement on Thursday, the three organizations deplored the “absence of constructive and substantial dialogue,” which they described as a sharp departure from the Ministry’s established practices in previous years.
The signatories of the statement recognized numerous shortcomings in the practice of journalism in Morocco and urged the government to take action to address these issues.
They called for the modernization of journalism and a fair revision of its performance, particularly through the implementation of decent working conditions for professionals and the updating and signing of the collective agreement.
The organizations noted the critical need to involve the relevant professional bodies in the revision process while firmly rejecting any unilateral action or decision-making, or any impositions that violate the law, the statement concluded.
