European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has postponed her planned visit to Morocco indefinitely, citing medical reasons, according to Africa Intelligence.
The visit, set against a delicate diplomatic backdrop, intended to focus on crucial negotiations regarding the revision of trade agreements on fishing and agriculture between Morocco and the European Union.
These talks were especially significant due to rising tensions in these sectors and aimed at renegotiating bilateral agreements to ensure a more balanced trade relationship between the two parties.
The postponement comes at a time when the commercial relations between Morocco and the EU are under critical reevaluation, particularly after the partial cancellation of economic agreements through a recent controversial court ruling.
The scheduled negotiations were meant to address both parties’ interests while meeting growing demands for sustainability, economic justice, and the protection of natural resources, all while safeguarding Morocco’s rights.
These re-negotiations are central to ongoing Euro-Mediterranean exchanges. As of now, Moroccan and European authorities have not provided any comments to reschedule the key meeting.
