The French National Rally (RN) secured the presidency of several key friendship groups in France’s National Assembly, including the France-Morocco group, in a symbolic victory on Monday reflecting its strategic focus on Morocco’s growing diplomatic influence, “Le Monde” reported.
After weeks of intense negotiations, RN chose Morocco first, highlighting its significant role in diplomacy, economic development, and immigration control, as well as its strong diaspora.
This move, described as a “strong signal,” comes at a time when Morocco’s recognition of its sovereignty over the Sahara has gained increasing support, particularly following France’s recognition on Morocco’s most recent Throne Day.
The RN’s win in securing other key groups, such as France-Italy and France-UK, contrasts with the fragmented outcomes for other parties.
Left-wing groups found themselves at odds over the allocation of countries such as Tüurkieye, Lebanon, and Senegal, with some voicing concerns over the fairness of the process.
However, the day’s events were overshadowed by the recent death of former RN leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, a longtime ally of Morocco and a figure who had worked towards strengthening bilateral ties.
