The Director General of National Police (DGSN) and Territorial Surveillance (DGST), Abdellatif Hammouchi, received Javier Antonio Sanz Becerro, the newly appointed Commissioner-General of Intelligence in Spain, on Wednesday in Rabat, according to DGST’s press release.
Becerro arrived at the head of a high-ranking security delegation on his first international visit since assuming office.
The visit highlights the strong bilateral ties and aims to further strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism and violent extremism.
During their meeting, both sides conducted extensive discussions, assessing the current levels of terrorist threats in global hotspots, particularly in the Sahel and Sahara region. They also reviewed the countries’ joint operations in counter terrorism.
The talks also included preparations for the successful hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. Both sides stated the importance of criminal intelligence and proactive measures to neutralize potential security risks.
The Spanish intelligence commissioner commended the exceptional level of cooperation with Morocco, noting that critical and highly reliable intelligence provided by the DGST has helped Spain thwart serious terrorist plots.
He reiterated Spain’s commitment to continuing this collaborative relationship in addressing the increasingly complex global security challenges. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of joint operations and simultaneous arrests carried out by the security services of both countries in targeting extremist networks.
Both parties agreed on the need to intensify and expand mechanisms for joint security cooperation across various fields, including counterterrorism and the fight against violent extremism, to address shared security risks.
This visit underscores the advanced level of security partnership between Morocco and Spain, highlighting the growing demand for Morocco’s expertise in combating terrorism.
