India is set to host an extraordinary gathering of nearly 400 million people for the Kumbh Mela, a significant Hindu religious festival that began on Monday.
The Kumbh Mela, celebrated as one of India’s most prominent religious events, holds the distinction of hosting the largest congregation of Hindus ever recorded, with a historic turnout on February 4, 2019. This festival observed in a cycle of approximately 12 years, marks the full revolution of Jupiter (Brihaspati) and draws millions of devotees to its sacred rituals.
On the festival’s opening, throngs of Hindus journey to the holy confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati rivers for ritual bathing, a key element of the celebrations.
Before dawn, worshippers began their pilgrimage to the water, immersing themselves in its sacred currents. “As a Hindu, this is an unmissable occasion,” said Reena Rai, a businesswoman who spoke to France24.
Rai traveled nearly 1,000 kilometers from Madhya Pradesh to participate in the festival, which continues until February 26. Her journey reflects the dedication of millions who gather to participate in this monumental event steeped in spiritual significance.
