A snowstorm South of the US caused the cancellation of over 2,600 flights and disrupted rail services in several cities on Friday, “USA Today” reported.
Over 590 flights were canceled at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia, 523 at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, and 541 at airports across the Dallas area in Texas, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
US National Weather Service (NWS) reported that the winter storm originated in the Gulf of Mexico, bringing heavy snowfall since Thursday. Affected areas include the Texas Panhandle, eastern Oklahoma, and central Arkansas.
The storm has also caused widespread power outages, with approximately 71,800 homes in Arkansas and Texas left without electricity, according to PowerOutage.us, a website that tracks power interruptions.
Rail services have been similarly affected, with Amtrak forced to cancel multiple routes through Texas and other southern regions.
Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel as the storm continues.
