In 2025, three Moroccan cities ranked among Africa’s most expensive cities, according to the ranking site “Numbeo’s” Cost of Living Index by City. Casablanca places fourth with a cost of living index of 31.4, followed by Rabat in ninth (29.9) and Marrakech in tenth (29.4).
The list highlights the growing economic challenges in Morocco, with rising living expenses affecting daily life for its residents.
As of Wednesday, The cost of living comparison shows that Rabat’s expenses are 5.2% lower than Casablanca’s, excluding rent. However, rent prices in the capital are 2.6% higher than in Casablanca and 34.1% more expensive than in Marrakech.
In terms of monthly living costs (excluding rent), Rabat averages MAD 5,290.9 Casablanca stands at MAD 5,488.2, and Marrakech is slightly lower at MAD 5,145.
The ranking factors in expenditures on basic needs such as rent, food, transportation, utilities, and healthcare, drawing from Numbeo’s quality of life database, contributed by over 829,839 global contributors.
Leading the list of Africa’s most expensive cities are Harare, in Zimbabwe, with 36.3 points, Johannesburg, South Africa, with 33.2, and Accra, Ghana, with 31.8. Other cities in the ranking include Cape Town, Pretoria, Nairobi, and Lagos, following closely behind Casablanca.
