UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has highlighted in its 2024 report on the country’s food security that Morocco is one of the largest exporters of fresh vegetables to the UK, accounting for 7.5% of total imports in 2023.
The report noted a significant increase in agricultural imports from Morocco during the past year, particularly tomatoes.
Spain, the Netherlands, France, and Poland were also named among the primary suppliers of agricultural products to the UK, underscoring the diversity of Britain’s food import sources.
“After Spain and the Netherlands, the largest exporters of fresh vegetables to the UK in 2023 were France (8.0%), Morocco (7.5%), and Poland (4.8%),” according to the report.
The report also underscored the agricultural ties between Morocco and the UK, underpinning their growing importance. However, it also addressed challenges facing the UK in food production, particularly in maintaining a stable and resilient supply chain amid droughts in North Africa and extreme weather conditions.
