US President-elect Donald Trump suggested Canada join America as its 51st state on Monday, hours after Justin Trudeau’s resignation.
Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that many people in Canada “love being the 51st state.”
“The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat,” Trump wrote. “Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” he added.
He suggested that if Canada becomes part of the US, “they would be ‘totally secure’ from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them.”
Some US media platforms suggested that Trump’s response to Trudeau’s resignation was “trolling.” In contrast, others said that he had brought up the merger idea to Trudeau in person as a legitimate plan for the future.
