The death toll of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck parts of China’s Tibet region on Tuesday climbed to 126 people, CNN reported.
The US Geological Survey and China’s Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) recorded two different magnitudes on the Richter scale, 7.1 and 6.8, respectively.
The quake struck at 9:05 am local time with tremors felt across the Himalayas, in nearby Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of northern India.
Footage of the aftermath shows destroyed houses in the remote mountainous region of Tibet, with damage being worse closer to the epicenter of the quake, recorded at the Shigatse high-altitude county of Dingri, located on the Chinese side of Mount Everest and home to about 62,000 people, Al Jazeera reported.
