Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior has launched a MAD 132.4 million (approximately $13 million) initiative to establish 12 regional logistics platforms in the Marrakech-Safi region designed to serve as strategic stockpiles of essential goods and supplies, according to media reports.
The initiative is part of Morocco’s national strategy to proactively address and effectively manage crises, precipitated in response to the 2022 earthquake that wreaked havoc on the region and continues to have serious ramifications as many residents face another winter in tents.
The facility will include four warehouses, each covering an area of 5,000 square meters, along with a 200-square-meter administrative space and a social area for staff. Additional components will include a well with a water reservoir, landscaped green spaces, and other external infrastructure.
These logistics platforms are intended to serve as critical hubs, storing essential reserves such as tents, blankets, beds, medicine, and staple food supplies. Over the period 2024 to 2028, the program is intended to ensure that each region has emergency supplies tailored to its unique needs and vulnerabilities.
It is expected that the initiative will help Morocco not only enhance its readiness to handle crises, but also further its decentralized territorial development model to ensure the kingdom’s systemic readiness to face climate and seismic challenges.
