Marsa Maroc, Morocco’s top port operator, has announced it is investing in Damerjog Oil FZE, the company overseeing construction of a new oil and gas marine terminal on the shores of the Gulf of Aden in Djibouti, Reuters reported.
Announced in a Moroccan government decree on Monday, the decision reflects Marsa Maroc’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in international logistics networks.
The specifics of the investment have not yet been disclosed, but Marsa Maroc has created a subsidiary, Marsa Maroc International Logistics, to implement its new strategic initiative.
As part of the expansion plan, the subsidiary will operate an offshoot entity called Marsa Djibouti, which will directly oversee the Damerjog project, marking a significant step in Marsa Maroc’s broader ambition to enhance its presence in East Africa’s burgeoning logistical supply chains.
Marsa Maroc International Logistics was formed to manage the company’s growing African footprint. This subsidiary has already made significant strides, such as launching Marsa Benin, which will be responsible for the management of terminals 1 and 5 at the Port of Cotonou in Benin.
The latest move aligns with Marsa Maroc’s wider strategy of reinforcing its operational capacity both in Africa and globally.
In June 2024, the company also secured a major contract for operating a container terminal at the Nador West Med port in northern Morocco, with a capacity of over three million, twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs).
Marsa Maroc, which is listed on the Casablanca Stock Exchange, currently manages nine major ports across Morocco, including Tanger Med 1 and Casablanca ports.
The Damerjog project adds to Marsa Maroc’s portfolio as it continues to grow its influence in the global port and logistics sector, particularly in Africa.
