Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene, and Social Welfare reported 1,267 deaths from Mpox in 2024, according to the Congolese Press Agency (ACP). Health officials recorded over 55,300 cases of the disease during the year, with a fatality rate of 2.28%.
In its annual epidemiological report, the ministry noted that 3,053 cases were reported during the 50th epidemiological week, from December 16 -21. The report highlighted that nine provincial health divisions recorded the highest concentration of cases.
Authorities implemented several measures to combat the outbreak, including a vaccination campaign targeting high-risk populations. Launched in early October, the campaign covered multiple provinces.
The World Health Organization (WHO) attributed the elevated mortality rate in the DRC to delayed diagnoses and limited access to treatment in many regions. The country is currently the epicenter of the Mpox epidemic.
